Pre-Conference Workshops: Find Out Why ALI Workshops Are Consistently Rated As Valuable Time Spent! - 01/26/2027
8:45 am - 9:15 am
Continental Breakfast, Coffee & Registration
Enjoy complimentary coffee, tea and continental breakfast as you meet your workshop leader and fellow attendees.
Stop by the registration desk to sign-in and pick up your materials for the next 3 days.
We'll kick things off at 9:30!
Your message was sent. But was it understood? Could employees act on it? Did the experience build trust or add to the noise?
Employees do not experience communications as strategies, campaigns, or channels. They experience moments: learning about a change, hearing from a leader, searching for answers, or deciding what to do next.
Bring a current communication challenge to this highly interactive workshop. Using human-centered design, an experience map, and his 5 Ms of Meaning-Making, you will uncover where understanding breaks down and redesign one critical moment to make it clearer, more relevant, actionable, and human.
You will leave with a tangible idea you have already begun designing and a repeatable framework you can immediately put to work.
Attendees will learn how to:
See communication through the employee’s eyes
Map the moments that shape a communication experience
Diagnose breakdowns across the Message, Meaning, Moment, Messenger, and Method
Prototype a better experience that strengthens understanding, action, and trust
Before you send your next communication, design the experience you want employees to have.
10:45 am - 10:55 am
Morning Refreshments & Networking Break
Enjoy complimentary coffee, tea, and other refreshments as you network with your peers as we switch over to the next workshop.
10:55 am - 12:20 pm
Workshop B: Writing Like a Human in the Age of AI: Lessons from a White House Speechwriter
Steven Kelly, Executive Communications Consultant | SPK Strategies
Our world is undergoing the greatest communications revolution since the invention of the printing press. Suddenly, every email, keynote, and op-ed speaks with the same artificial perfection. How can you stand out in a sea of sameness? And how can you use AI without losing yourself to it? Drawing on his experience writing for leaders in the White House and the C-suite, Steven Kelly, former Director of Speechwriting to Vice President Kamala Harris, will offer his thoughts on crafting a message that breaks through in the age of AI.
Attendees will learn a field test for AI writing and a few essential strategies for using story and structure to sound human. Steven will also share a framework that speechwriters use when writing under (very) short deadlines, a method for learning someone’s voice, as well as a few insider strategies for building trust and rapport with a principal.

Workshop C: Activating the Modern Comms OS: A Strategy Framework for Leaders & Communicators
Preston Lewis, Chief Communications Officer | New State & TechVerified
Most communications functions are running on an outdated operating system. Channels have multiplied, AI is reshaping how content gets made and found, and leaders expect communications to prove business impact, yet many teams still operate as a request-driven service desk. This 90-minute interactive workshop will dive deep into the Comms OS, a strategy framework world-class companies are using to rebuild internal communications as a strategic function. Four integrated pillars (Strategy and Planning, Systems and Workflows, Skills and Capabilities, and Technology and Tactics) come to life through the DISCO process: Discovery, Insights, Strategy, Communications, and Optimization. At every stage, you’ll see how emerging technology powered by AI can accelerate the work while delivering on your organization’s AI utilization and transformation objectives. Leaders and communicators will leave ready to assess where their function stands today, then design and activate an operating model tailored to what people need and your business-critical priorities.
Join this workshop and learn how to:
Diagnose the maturity of your current communications operating system
Turn discovery and data into actionable insights about what employees need
Connect communications strategy directly to business-critical priorities
Design workflows and governance that move teams from reactive to strategic
Use AI-powered tools to scale content, personalize delivery, and measure impact
Build the skills your team needs to lead AI adoption, not just communicate about it
Apply continuous optimization to grow lasting influence with leaders
3:35 pm - 3:45 pm
Afternoon Refreshments & Stretch Break
Enjoy complimentary coffee, tea, and other refreshments as you network with your peers as we switch over to the next workshop.
3:45 pm - 5:00 pm
Workshop D: Worth It? Let’s Work It: How IC Can Craft Authentic Organizational Values
Gabriel Galdamez, Vice President | Ruder Finn
Your organization has core values. But are they alive in the day-to-day experience… or just decorating the lobby?
Internal communicators are uniquely positioned to help close the gap between what an organization says it stands for and what employees actually experience. We know our people. We understand your leaders. We know how to communicate with clarity, empathy, and authenticity. This work is MADE for us!
In this hands-on session, we’ll work through a practical framework and real case study for pressure testing and refreshing core values.
You’ll walk away with:
A clear-eyed understanding of what good core values are (and aren’t!)
A framework for auditing and gut-checking your org’s values
Confidence that you are exactly the right person to steward this work

Creating Buzz Around Leadership Content: Lessons from a High-Impact Engagement Campaign
Brinn Strange, Internal Communications Partner | Tivity Health
Employee attention is harder to earn than ever, and leadership messages often struggle to compete with packed inboxes and competing priorities.
In this session, attendees will learn how a simple "Guess the EOT" campaign transformed engagement with our executive video series by tapping into curiosity, participation, and friendly competition. Faced with a challenge to increase viewership of executive communications, our internal communications team developed a multi-channel campaign that invited employees to identify a mystery member of the Executive Operating Team based on clues released through Internal News and Teams.
The results exceeded expectations:
Executive video views increased by 56%.
The campaign generated some of the highest engagement rates of the year across internal channels.
Employees actively participated in conversations, submitted guesses, and returned multiple times throughout the campaign to uncover new clues.
Attendees will leave with practical strategies for:
Using gamification to increase participation without significant budget or technology investments.
Building anticipation around leadership communications.
Integrating executive content into broader employee engagement campaigns.
Leveraging Teams, newsletters, and social-style communications to drive visibility.
Measuring success and demonstrating business value to leadership.
This session will provide a real-world case study complete with campaign planning, messaging examples, metrics, lessons learned, and ideas that communicators can immediately adapt in their own organizations.
10:05 am - 10:40 am
Creating a Culture Where Employees Become Storytellers and Advocates
Anna Jacoby, Marketing Communications Specialist | Terumo Blood and Cell Technologies
No matter what industry you're in, getting employees to post authentically on social media isn't easy; the fear of "saying the wrong thing" runs deep. This session shares how one employee advocacy program grew from zero buy-in to a waitlisted, high-demand initiative across new regions and platforms in just one year. Attendees will leave with practical, adaptable tactics for building trust, balancing brand guardrails with authentic voice, and turning skeptical employees into your most effective brand advocates.

Use audience segmentation to determine what information belongs where. Develop a content strategy based on audience needs rather than organizational structure — moving from “Who owns this information?” to “Who needs this information?”
Use content audits to identify, consolidate, relocate, and retire outdated or redundant information.
Navigate stakeholder resistance and organizational politics when changing long-standing assumptions about where information should live.
