Walking the Talk: Leading By Example And Its Impact On Internal Communications

We have all heard some iteration of the phrase “Don’t talk the talk if you can’t walk the walk.” How often do we actually put that phrase into practice as individual leaders or as a leadership team? Leadership can exist in many forms— an executive, a director, or a manager of a team are considered to be holding traditional leadership roles.

In our role as internal communicators we are tasked with the vital responsibility of being leaders on multiple levels. We have a unique opportunity to be the kind of leaders that bring validity and integrity to our words by backing it up with the actions that match. Employees rely on us to communicate essential information that they need and to do this in an honest, appropriate and accessible manner.

In this session, we will look at the importance of these values and how implementing them into our work helps to create a positive and inclusive workplace. We will look at techniques that assist us in knowing our audience and researching the proper channels to reach them. We will work on strategies to hold ourselves to a high standard of communicating, both ethically and transparently. We will learn the importance of walking the talk and the benefits to our workplace environments by doing so.
