The Communicator’s Role in Building an Equitable, Anti-Racist Workplace

When it comes to building a welcoming and equitable workforce, there are 4 vital lessons any organization can take.

The first step towards creating an equitable, anti-racist workplace is understanding the difference between equity and equality. We typically see corporations diving up resources equally. And, if that’s the case, we assume equality equals fairness. However, that’s not the case.

Organizations that enforce an equality-based system negate the barriers placed on others (women, veterans, BIPOC, and more).  Instead, they should be allocating their time and resources towards an equitable environment that levels the playing field for all.

Secondly, it’s important to remember that language is vital. Words hold power and significant meaning and continues to evolve. Terms like “at-risk”, “minority”, and “underrepresented” focus on how a particular group is less than the primary group. Instead, utilize language that offers a fair and equitable tone.

Thirdly, leadership roles should help create an environment of belonging. Leaders in a particular organization should aid in protecting the culture and help model the behavior they wish to see from others.

The last step towards creating an anti-racist and quitable workplace is offering the ability to create change through communities. Providing employees the opportunities to connect, support, and express their thoughts with others is crucial. Hosting virtual events and creating safe spaces for employees is a necessary first step towards creating a community that supports diversity and an equitable workplace.
