As the energy industry went through the bust part of the economic cycle and the first Apple II computers came off the truck in Calgary, Mike Spear started an information consulting business to mine the very early online world for data. That bad timing sent him into an award winning journalism career but he never turned his back on digital communications and entered into social media in the 80’s as a SysOp for CompuServe.
He has since spoken at numerous conferences on how to use the online technology in journalism and in science communications and is one of the founders of Canada’s only science blogging networks – Science Borealis.
He is currently Communications Director for the not-for-profit research funding organization Genome Alberta where he has helped bring the research community kicking and screaming into the modern communications world.
