John Verrico has more than 32 years of experience as a public affairs professional in federal and state government agencies, working extensively in media, community and employee relations. He is the President of the National Association of Government Communicators, a non-profit organization focused on professional development and networking for public affairs and communications professionals in federal, state and local government agencies.
A retired Navy Reserve Master Chief Journalist and former freelance journalist, John is currently the Chief of Media Relations for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Science & Technology Directorate, where he translates science and engineering research for reporters, stakeholders, and the general public. He is also a professional speaker and trainer on communication and motivational leadership topics.
John earned his Master of Science degree in Organizational Leadership from Norwich University and a Bachelor of Science in communication from the University of the State of New York. He has received many awards, including the Navy’s Rear Admiral Thompson Award for Excellence in Public Affairs, Public Relations Society of America’s Silver Dome Award for community relations, and was named one of the Top 5 Event Managers of 1998 by Exhibitor Magazine.
In his spare time, John and his wife, Bonnie, have become enamored with cruise vacations and bad-movie parties. John loves and collects classic monster movies and memorabilia which he displays in his bizarre version of a man cave.
